Cummins is bringing connectivity to the X15 Efficiency series engines and Endurant HD powertrains used in Freightliner Trucks. Buyers of the Freightliner Cascadia will get Acumen, an ECU that connects to Cummins’ technology platform, enabling direct access to over-the-air updates, digital apps and future service-related features. By expanding their line of connected vehicles, Cummins hopes to reduce ownership costs in both current and future models.
The biggest advancement for the Cummins X Series and the Endurant HD powertrain is the ability to link location to performance. The On-Ramp Boost feature uses GPS to detect when the truck is at an on-ramp, enabling a temporary increase in power to get up to highway speeds. Once underway, the ECU can customize engine performance for maximum fuel efficiency under light loads and increased power where it’s needed. The result should be better fuel economy and shorter trip times, improving profitability for Freightliner Cascadia owners. Cummins Engine Business OEM Leader Rob Neitzke told Heavy Duty Trucking buyers should expect to be the first to receive new connectivity features when they’re launched. This will keep the trucks’ features up-to-date during their lifecycle.
Cummins will collect data from connected vehicles to get a better picture of real life conditions, including duty cycles and performance in different environments. This data will help them develop more reliable, efficient and cost-effective trucks. The first Cummins X Series engines with this connectivity system started production in August. The company plans on rolling out these features to the rest of their product lineup.
